What if you could work with remarkable people on extraordinary things? What if the end result was something a little bit special? What if your role was mission critical?

For nearly 70 years, AWE has been at the forefront of nuclear weapons research and development. We have a critical mission: to provide the warheads for the UK’s ultimate deterrent – Trident. We also use our unique skills to provide wider UK government with counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction solutions.

It takes a special sort of person to work at AWE. What if that person was you?

AWE is currently recruiting for a Radiation Protection Adviser

The Radiation Protection and Dosimetry Group are part of the Engineering and Science Resource function at AWE. We are responsible for providing legal and technical advice to a range of internal and external customers regarding health and safety in relation to working with radioactive materials and other sources of ionising radiation.

Location – Reading/Basingstoke Area
Package – Subject to experience
Closing date – 20 April 2021

AWE offer a competitive salary, market leading contributory pension scheme, generous holiday entitlement, excellent work/life balance including a nine-day working fortnight and flexible working hours (role dependent).  A salary sacrifice scheme is also available. We will consider candidates looking for full-time or part-time hours.

No other organisation in the UK provides radiation protection advice across the same range of applications and customers.  Our advice covers everything from plutonium manufacturing facilities to forensic laboratories, new build facilities to advice on decommissioning old ones and providing advice on working with some of the most powerful X-ray generating machines in the world to working on national security operations.  Each present their own unique set of challenges meaning that every day is different.

We are looking to recruit a certificated Radiation Protection Adviser or Health Physicist (radiation protection scientists). Successful candidates will either hold a current RPA 2000 certificate or have operational experience of providing clear and proportionate radiation protection advice to their customers.  The ability to effectively communicate this advice through a variety of media is essential.

It would be advantageous for candidates to have degree in a science, technology or engineering discipline or experience of working in areas such as health physics, dosimetry, environment, radioactive waste management, health and safety (ESH) or other associated fields.

A career in radiation protection is an excellent choice for someone who wishes to continue to use their practical and theoretical scientific and technical knowledge and skills in a multi-disciplinary environment. The role will involve both office-based and practical elements which provide opportunities to get out and see some of our unique facilities and processes that we undertake.

All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role. The successful candidate should also be willing and able to work in designated areas where the need arises.

Please note that you must be a British National to apply for a role at AWE.

AWE plays a crucial role in the defence of the United Kingdom, by providing and maintaining the warheads for the country’s nuclear deterrent. We are a centre of scientific, engineering and technological excellence, with some of the most advanced research, design and production facilities in the world. Our unique expertise also assists the UK Government in developing and delivering a range of innovative and integrated support services, including national nuclear security and counter-terrorism solutions.

AWE is an equal opportunities employer. We value diversity and welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds. We particularly welcome applications from sections of the community which are currently under-represented at AWE, including women, BAME and people with disabilities.
