The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. Combining world-class facilities with major international collaborations, and some of the world’s most talented staff, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

A vacancy has arisen for a Programme Manager in the Particle Physics and Accelerators team within STFC Programmes Directorate.  The role will support the delivery and oversight of the funded particle physics and accelerator physics programmes, with primary focus on the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). You will be involved in the delivery and oversight of large projects, strategic and other expert reviews, stakeholder engagement, management information and communications.

You will have regular interaction with academics and researchers within universities and STFC’s own laboratories, and with management and administrative staff at different levels within STFC. Your role will involve some travel and occasional overnight stays, mainly in the UK.

Key responsibilities

  • Research, interpret and analyse both programmatic and financial information to draft briefings, reports and provide advice to programme managers and other senior STFC management.
  • Assist with day-to-day programme management and oversight, undertaking assigned tasks associated with project initiation/approval and implementation.
  • Coordinate and plan project oversight committees and review panel meetings. This includes planning review/meeting timelines, drafting meeting agendas/papers; overseeing meeting arrangements and managing the distribution of information required for meetings.
  • Attend meetings, take minutes and drafting feedback/reports/progress updates.
  • Establish strategic or expert review panels including drafting terms of reference, recruiting panel members, and maintaining panel membership for standing committees.
  • Develop good working relations with the scientific community.
  • Work with colleagues in STFC’s communications team to maintain, update and create webpages, fact sheets, and news stories.
  • Deputise for the head of team as required.

You will have strong interpersonal skills, including written and oral communication. You will also have the ability to interact effectively at all levels within the organisation, and the external scientific community. You will be capable of working effectively within a team environment, contribute to team motivation, as well as work with minimal supervision. You will have the ability to think creatively, to take on responsibility for different tasks and seek continuous improvement and accept change. You should be able to demonstrate a high level of drive, enthusiasm and focus on the achievement of goals.

You will have an interest in science and in STFC’s particle physics and accelerator physics programmes, together with an understanding of the role and operation of UK Research and Innovation (or be able to acquire this knowledge quickly). You will be able to demonstrate good analytical and financial skills, as well as good management skills, including planning, prioritising and organising work to meet deadlines.
