Overview

We are seeking an outstanding Senior R&D Staff Member to help Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) extend its world leading reputation and capabilities in the search for neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay of Ge-76. This position resides in the Neutrino Research Group in the Physics Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our research team, you will help lead ORNL’s efforts in R&D and project planning for LEGEND (the Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay), a next-generation 0νββ search using enriched Ge detectors in an active liquid-argon shield. You will also help lead the ORNL research programme on the progenitor experiment, the Majorana Demonstrator.

Major duties/responsibilities

  • Assume a major leadership role in the development and execution of the LEGEND-1000 neutrinoless double-beta decay project, building strong relationships with other members and institutions in the collaboration, and managing at least one of the major tasks within the project.
  • Play a leading role as part of an ORNL team of scientists and support staff to execute R&D for the design of the experiment and to develop project proposals, design reports, and project management structure.
  • Be a strong advocate for LEGEND-1000, effectively leveraging ORNL expertise in detector physics and project management, and successes in the Majorana Demonstrator experiment.
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality programme requirements.
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
  • Work across the Division and Directorates in the laboratory to advance the science impact of the Division.

Basic qualifications

  • A PhD in nuclear physics, astro-particle physics, or a related discipline and a minimum of six years of experience.
  • Background in experimental searches for neutrinoless double beta decay or other experimental low-background rare-event physics.

Preferred qualifications

  • An excellent record of highly productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrated capability and familiarity in planning, coordination, and management of medium-to-large-scale experimental physics projects.
  • Demonstrated expertise with ultra-low-background and/or high-purity-germanium detector experiments.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work closely with and help lead a large international collaboration.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to set and manage priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines and adapt to changing requirements.
