About us
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. Through combining world-class facilities with major international collaborations, and some of the world’s most talented staff, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology / engineering. STFC’s Central Laser Facility (CLF) provides scientists with an unparalleled range of state-of-the-art laser technology to carry out a broad range of experiments in physics, chemistry and biology.
STFC is one of nine partner organisations that have been brought together to create UK Research and Innovation (UKRI); an organisation with a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.
About the role
We now have an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled experimental physicist with relevant experience to join our High Power Lasers Group within CLF, on a two year fixed term basis.
Your main role would be to design and deliver laser plasma experiments by coordinating a team of scientists and engineers including external user groups. You will undertake planning and safe execution of experiments with full responsibility for the experimental cycle. There would also be opportunities to work on innovative developmental projects involving cutting-edge applications and technologies.
This is an excellent opportunity for an emerging scientist to develop further: the successful candidate will have a stimulating work environment with exposure to cutting-edge laser plasma technology and fantastic prospects to do collaborative research with some of the world-leading groups in the field.
About you
You will have completed (or be close to completion) a PhD in experimental plasma or laser driven source physics, or in an associated area. An equivalent qualification coupled with equivalent research experience is also acceptable.
You should have a good understanding of the science underlying laser-plasma, secondary source production and future potential research. You will be able to demonstrate good practical skills and experience of working with high power lasers and laser-plasma experiments.
With a professional and practical approach and an analytical, logical and quick-learning mind, you will also be able to communicate effectively with the operational team and facility users.
Excellent organisational and planning skills also are required for this role.
Benefits
STFC offers a benefits package designed to provide an excellent work/life balance including 30 days’ annual leave, flexible working hours, a workplace nursery, exceptional pension scheme, social and sporting activities and societies, a subsidised restaurant and good public transport links. Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages.
