Company description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job description

Introduction

Are you passionate about technical work and interested in joining the operational activities of our mechanical and scaffolding services for the experiments and experimental areas? Do you have solid experience being involved in service contract management? Do you have experience with work site supervision in a mechanical and scaffolding field? Are you a qualified and proactive technician, willing to contribute to a unique environment at the heart of one of the world’s most complex and exciting scientific experiments? Then, this opportunity is for you – join the largest particle physics research laboratory in the world. CERN, take part! You will join:

  • The Beams Department (BE), responsible for the beam generation, acceleration, diagnostics, controls and performance optimization for the LHC and its injector accelerators.
  • The Experimental Areas (EA) Group, responsible for the beamlines, infrastructure and management of CERN’s experimental areas and provides engineering support and services including associated contracts. EA is furthermore supporting the LHC experiments as well as participating in and partly hosting the management of a number of CERN wide projects.
  • The Associated Services Section (AS) provides a strong support to experiments and users through its five core services (Mechanic, Scaffolding, Gas, Cabling and Vacuum).

As Foreman / Forewoman, responsible for the field mechanical activities as well supervising the scaffolding contract, you will aim for high customer satisfaction, while continuously respecting, improving and developing safety procedures.

Functions

After an initial training period, you will:

  • Gather the requirements from users, assess the possible solutions and advise on the most optimal ones; ensure that the structures are conformed to with applicable safety rules, interacting with safety officers when needed.
  • Manage onsite installation and maintenances activities, respecting agreed schedules.
  • Analyse and adapt the request of resources under your responsibility to fulfil all approved jobs; in particular anticipating high workload periods during annual shutdown of particle beamlines.
  • Make sure that all necessary safety measures are taken in compliance with CERN safety rules and correctly applied during work on site.
  • Supervise scaffolding contract activities and assist the Section Leader in the upcoming retendering process.
  • Act as technical interface with respect to our users and provide input for selecting the most suitable technical solutions (validation of specifications, design solutions, technical alternatives, and costing).
  • When needed, you will also take part in the installation, maintenance and adjustments of the beamlines under EA responsibility and you will perform interventions on LHC forward detectors.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering or a related field.

Scaffolder certificate and Scaffold Inspection certification are requested. Cherry Picker certificate would be an asset.

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in worksite supervision (organisation, planning, control).
  • Demonstrated experience in scaffolding (Assembly and Inspection).
  • Experience in technical contract supervision.
  • Previous experience in the coordination of work involving external contractors and the preparation of the technical documentation.
  • Previous experience on equipment related to particle accelerators would be an asset.

Technical competencies

  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment: including maintenance of these structures and equipment.
  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation.
  • Specification and follow-up of technical aspects of a contract.
  • Knowledge of personal protective equipment.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret technical drawings.

Behavioural competencies

  • Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships. Contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude; addressing issues. Working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
  • Achieving results: Delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations. Having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
  • Managing self: Using time efficiently and effectively. Working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
