Summary

An exciting opportunity to provide specialist knowledge in the evaluation of speed, red light, red X and similar law enforcement devices and to ensure that this capability is fit for the future.

Dstl provides science and technology advice to the Home Office to support their approval of road safety enforcement equipment, including speed and red-light violation cameras. Our advice assists the Secretary of State to make decisions about the approval of individual devices. This advice is based on detailed evaluation of a series of tests which assure that the equipment is suitable for providing evidence in Court.

You will need to have effective communication skills and enjoy working with a variety of partners from industry as well as independent, accredited test facilities. You will prioritise your work effectively to ensure you can deliver what is required within the right timescales.

  • Have an aptitude for digesting technical information and cross referencing it with the required Home Office standards.
  • Keep accurate records, and communicate precisely and diplomatically
  • Be self-motivated and interested in creating improvements to processes

Job description

In this role you will

  • Identify and assess vulnerabilities in equipment.
  • Demonstrate effective evidence based decision making, in particular making robust statistical judgements.
  • Manage relationships with commercial equipment manufacturers and external party testing bodies.
  • Scrutinise testing bodies on the quality of their testing and their reports.
  • Develop relationships with a network of Dstl staff with complementary expertise.
  • Contribute to process improvements shaping the future of the capability.

Responsibilities

We are looking for someone who has:

Experience
Essential

  • Experience of applying technical knowledge to evaluate information or solve problems.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a security or government setting, whether industry, MOD, Home Office, the Armed Forces or the Defence Agencies.
  • Demonstrable skills and knowledge of business and process improvement.
  • Awareness of Home Office test standards and their application.
  • Experience of working in a regulatory environment.
  • Experience of working with external stakeholders.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Professional or vocational qualifications or equivalent experience in Physics or Engineering is essential.

Desirable

  • Qualifications or equivalent experience in one of electronics, radar, lasers, optics, geometry, RF interference, software, statistics, data security, engineering, mechanical design. Membership of relevant professional body.

Skills

Essential

  • Proven ability to quickly learn and utilise new knowledge and skills.
  • Confident and clear written and verbal communications skills.
  • Diligent and pays meticulous attention to detail.
  • Be able to extract information from numerous sources of different types including written reports and raw data and compare against specifications and standards, identifying potential discrepancies.
  • Be able to keep accurate records, and communicate precisely and diplomatically.
