The ELI Beamlines Facility is a leading laser research centre and part of ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure) pan-European Research Infrastructure hosting the world’s most intense lasers. ELI provides a unique tool of support for scientific excellence in Europe. ELI Beamlines developed and operates four state-of-the-art high power femtosecond laser systems reaching unprecedent intensities. ELI Beamlines offers to its users a unique femtosecond source of X-rays and accelerated particles. These beamlines enable pioneering research not only in physics and material science, but also in biomedicine, laboratory astrophysics with strong application potential.

Currently, several of the main laser beamlines are operational and are being expanded and upgraded to reach their full performance and maximum availability. Other laser beamlines are in commissioning and new cutting-edge laser sources are in the design and development phase. The ELI Beamlines Facility builds on 320 researchers, engineers and other professionals from more than 25 countries.

We are looking for a candidate with sufficient experience to lead a team of 10+ engineers and technicians and who has deep understanding of complex technology development and of the operation life cycle and is ready to step actively in the ongoing development. As Team Leader of Beamline Integration Support (BIS), you will lead a team that applies its expertise and knowledge to support research teams in development, integration, commissioning and operation of state-of-the-art complex experimental systems and user stations that use the facility lasers to generate secondary pulsed sources of x-rays and particle beams with associated scientific equipment. The experimental apparatus typically includes complex vacuum systems, in-vacuum optomechanics, cooling systems, gas handling systems, high stability structures, safety systems etc.

What will you work on?

  • Leading the BIS team in Technical Infrastructure and Instrumentation Services Department.
  • Responsibility for operation of dedicated laboratory and workshop facilities.
  • Planning and organization of installation and integration activities.
  • Supporting research team in defining requirements for design, installation and commissioning of scientific instrumentation.
  • Coordination of technical support activities in the experimental areas.
  • Responsibility for configuration management of the laser beam transport system – concept of operations, design, development, testing, delivery, and integration of the beam distribution.
  • Responsibility for coordination of technical documents processing.
  • Preparation of technical documents for tenders.
  • Coordination with other expert teams

What do we expect?

  • University degree in technical field or natural sciences (PhD preferred).
  • Five years of experience working in a senior role in design and development of complex technological systems (research infrastructures preferably) or team lead role.
  • Experience with tender preparation.
  • Desire to learn new technologies.
  • Experience with laser systems is a plus.
  • Experience with configuration management is a plus.
  • An appreciation of and ability to work effectively within a diverse team with different cultural backgrounds and business practices.
  • Good communications skills and verbal skills.
  • Goal-oriented and structured work.
  • Passion for continuous optimization and improvement to make things finish easier is a plus.
  • Excellent command of English
