Lunds universitet, MAX IV, Controls & IT

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The university has 40,000 students and more than 8000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed, it will receive more than 2000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.

The MAX IV Controls and IT team (KITS) deliver solutions to the whole MAX IV organization in the areas of control system hardware, controls software applications, infrastructure and networking, information management and scientific software. This is a dynamic and highly challenging environment and requires close collaboration with the staff in order to understand the needs and be effective in forming solutions. We are around 50 people in total who work in five domains in a well-organized and agile way. We hold values of lean management, knowledge spread, user autonomy, continuous improvement and flexibility as guiding principles for our work.

Brief description of the IT Infrastructure team

Experiments located at the MAX IV laboratory collect data for scientific analysis, to be stored and made accessible to compute resources. For this purpose, our IT Infrastructure team is operating a tiered high-performance storage system designed for high I/O rates, large volumes and high availability. The challenges to the system design come from the ever-increasing data rates provided by new generations of detector systems, as well as the raising capabilities of the HPC infrastructure and scientific applications. The storage engineer position at MAX IV provides the opportunity to work within a small but competent team, in a technically challenging environment and with state-of-the art high performance systems from leading vendors.

Work duties and areas of responsibility

The successful candidate will participate, as part of the MAX IV Infrastructure team, in the operation and scale-out of our IBM Spectrum Scale installation, the deployment and operation of the upcoming long-term storage facility, as well as play a key role in the continuing design and development of the system as needed to satisfy evolving requirements.

The successful candidate is expected to actively contribute to the future development, and be able to follow and analyse the trends and new developments in storage technologies. Key tasks for this position are centred on the data archive, but include also the solid state, HDD and tape-based tiers of the system.

Key tasks

  • Participate in deployment and operation of the long-term storage system for MAX IV scientific data
  • Operation and maintenance of all tiers of the MAX IV storage system (IBM ESS/Spectrum Scale)
  • Performance evaluation and tuning
  • Integration with other components of the IT infrastructure, such as beamline data acquisition systems, HPC cluster, data transfer system and cloud storage solutions
  • Evaluation of new releases, features and SW components
  • Participation in collaborative projects within MAX IV, other Lund University units and national computing infrastructures

Requirements

  • Extensive experience with operating cluster storage systems
  • Solid understanding of the Linux operating system
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Fluent in English

Desirable

  • Working experience with GPFS/Spectrum Scale
  • Experience with operating tape storage systems, IBM Spectrum Archive and/or IBM Spectrum Protect a strong plus
  • Working experience with Infiniband
  • Experience working in scientific environment

The successful candidate is creative, service minded, takes initiative and has problem solving analytical ability and the ability to cooperate.
