Senior Magnet Design Engineer

The UK Atomic Energy Authority seeks applications from world-class engineers to help accelerate the commercialisation of fusion energy.

You will be an experienced superconducting magnet designer and will be responsible for developing a magnet design capability within the engineering design unit (EDU) of the Central Engineering Department. The scope of work will include supporting ongoing facilities (Joint European Torus (JET) and MAST-Upgrade), major programmes (EUROfusion, STEP) and the design of new world-leading, innovative facilities in support of these projects. You will gain a wealth of exposure due to the support received from skilled engineering and technical resources from across the organization.

These projects embody our mission to develop nuclear fusion as a source of abundant, safe and low-carbon energy, with the aim of commercialising fusion energy. As a Senior Magnet Design Engineer, you will play a critical role in meeting these objectives.

To succeed in this role, you will be required to:

• From a blank sheet, create, develop and manage UKAEA’s superconducting magnet design capability.
• Lead in superconducting magnet design, fabrication, and testing by performing investigations using expertise in mechanical design, finite element analysis, fluid mechanics, and electromagnetics.
• In partnership with the Work Package Manager, develop engineering execution plans and deliver activities to cost and schedule, with budgetary responsibility for the development work.
• Collaborate with UKAEA cryogenics subject matter experts to ensure effective designs.
• Direct and oversee a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and analysts in the production of superconducting magnet designs and analysis.
• Help to develop and mentor less experienced engineers and technologists in superconducting magnet systems.
• Collaborate with UK Universities, external consultancies and suppliers to produce feasible UK-based solutions.

Following recent UK funding, two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built. Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential

• BEng or BSc in scientific or engineering discipline.
• Full member of a recognised professional institution.
• Strong background in the design and manufacture of superconducting magnets.
• Understanding of cryogenics.
• Ability to use a range of engineering analysis and modelling tools.
• Leadership of multi-disciplinary teams.
• Experienced in the preparation of bids and proposals.

Desirable

• Development of non-magnet engineers and communication of knowledge.
• Development of graduates and/or apprentices.
