The Excellence Cluster ORIGINS investigates the development of the universe from the Big Bang to the emergence of life. ORIGINS combines the disciplines of astrophysics, biophysics and particle physics and builds on the research achievements of the Excellence Cluster Universe (2006–2018). The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU), the Technical University of Munich (TUM), five Max Planck Institutes, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Leibniz Computing Centre (LRZ) are involved in ORIGINS.

We invite applications for Scientific Staff (f/m/d), (full-time), initially for five years to support the activities of the Computational Center for Particle and Astrophysics (C2PAP). C2PAP is a central collaborative element of ORIGINS to support scientists in ORIGINS to optimize applications and develop algorithms for large HPC clusters, in particular for deployment on the C2PAP cluster, a subsystem of the LRZ SuperMUC high-performance computer. C2PAP consists of a team of scientific computing experts with experience both in the scientific domains of ORIGINS as well as in high-performance computing, software development and statistics/machine learning.

Your profile

We specifically seek a staff scientist with experience in particle physics, reconstruction algorithms and high-throughput data processing, who should work alongside with the other C2PAP team members that have an astrophysics and HPC/machine learning background.

Our offer

We offer a full-time position at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) starting at the earliest possible date. The contract duration corresponds to the Cluster ORIGINS duration until 31.12.2025. In case of a 2nd phase of ORIGINS a further extension is possible. Salary and benefits are commensurate with the pay scale of public service organizations (TV-L E13).

Application

Application documents including a cover letter describing your interest in this position, a CV, your PhD/Master/diploma certificates, a list of publications and a detailed list of IT and computing experience should be sent to job@origins-cluster.de (please send as single PDF file and specify C2PAP-2020 in subject line). Please have three letters of recommendation also sent to job@origins-cluster.de.

The deadline for applications is 1 September 2020, but we will continue to receive and consider applications until the position is filled.

LMU is an equal opportunity employer. The advancement of women in the sciences, especially in all areas of physics, is integral to the policy of the Excellence Cluster ORIGINS as well. We therefore especially encourage applications from women. Disabled persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants.

Contact

Further information can be obtained from Dr. Günter Duckeck and from the webpages of ORIGINS cluster and C2PAP.
