STFC’s Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) undertakes particle accelerator design and operation for current and future ‘Big Science’ facilities. We work on numerous high profile projects with national and international partners, including CERN, Fermi National Laboratory (FNAL), and the European Spallation Source (ESS). The Radio Frequency (RF) and Cryogenics group within ASTeC designs, builds, develops and supports advanced RF and cryogenic systems for high-energy particle accelerators. 

About the role

You will be part of a small team responsible for the development, procurement, commissioning and operation of high power RF systems for the various particle accelerator projects and be responsible for:

  •  Upgrade, maintenance and operation of CLARA high power RF systems.
  • Operation and development of RF systems within the Linac Test Facility (LTF).
  • Design studies for high power RF systems on UK-XFEL and the Relativistic Ultra-fast Electron Diffraction and Imaging (RUEDI) accelerator.
  • RF support on the PIP-II programme including assisting with the procurement of high power couplers.

You will work closely with other RF engineers and scientists, mechanical designers and external contractors to continuously develop and improve these high power RF systems.

About you

You should be a highly motivated engineer or scientist, qualified to degree level or equivalent in a relevant science or engineering subject. You should also have experience with high power RF technologies and ideally have an interest in RF aspects of accelerators. 

The role requires the candidate to work well in a team and to be able to operate independently. You will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a highly organised approach to work, be innovative and inquisitive, with a desire to gain new skills in a broad range of areas.
