The Department of Physics at the University of Bath invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the STFC funded “Elimination of H0 Systematics with Novel Analysis Techniques” project.

You will work with Dr Vicky Scowcroft, developing analysis techniques to combine observational data from current and upcoming facilities (eg. Gaia, JWST) with stellar models to calibrate the local Cepheid and RR Lyrae distance scales. We will use these new calibrations to reduce the systematics in the standard candle distance ladder and the Hubble constant and addressing the current H0 tension.

We particularly welcome candidates with experience working with large observational datasets and/or backgrounds in cosmology or variable star research. Candidates with expertise in pipeline development, stellar modelling and/or statistics are especially encouraged to apply. You should hold a PhD in astrophysics (or a related discipline) or be close to award.

You will work alongside members of the Bath Astrophysics Group – their research interests include cosmology, galaxy structure and kinematics, time-domain astrophysics, stellar populations, star formation, and ISM conditions. Astrophysics group members can attend regular seminars and colloquia, and hold weekly group meetings and journal clubs where topics on cosmology and the local group are discussed alongside scientific developments from the broader field.

This is a fixed-term position for an initial period of two years, nominally from 1 April 2021.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Vicky Scowcroft (vs522@bath.ac.uk), however, please ensure that your application is submitted via the university website with:

  • A two-page research statement.
  • An up-to-date CV.
  • A publications list.
