This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and commercially aware publishing professional to take the next step in their publishing career. The role is offered on a fixed-term basis for six months in order to cover a period of increased workload. The job holder will be responsible for managing the relationship with a number of IOPP’s society partners, working with them to develop their journals publishing portfolio.

About the role

The Publisher is responsible for managing and developing a number of journals within IOPP’s partners’ portfolios, including building and managing the relationship(s) of Society Partners, managing budgets, renewing existing contracts, and providing the customer service to support this.

In addition, the Publisher supports IOPP and its partners through identifying market opportunities for new journal and product launches to increase market share within the field, e.g. managing a new journal launch, as required.

With others across the business, the Publisher supports IOPP’s partnership strategy and approach by providing central co-ordination of IOPP’s partnership activities, including partner development, reporting and contracts, onboarding processes as well as communications.

The Publisher monitors and manages the budgets for the various products and services under his/her control and these budgets are defined annually by the partners, Senior Publisher, and Associate Director.

Working proactively and collaboratively across the organisation and with colleagues from the wider industry, you’ll keep up to date on the latest developments in the STM publishing environment. You will focus on generating ideas, creating new business, and identifying opportunities to increase market share, providing insightful information to support this.

About you

The successful candidate will be a publishing professional with the enthusiasm, drive and interpersonal skills needed to deliver sustained portfolio growth and development through successful management of partner relationships. Commercially aware and customer focused, you will understand what it takes to make journals profitable and have the interpersonal skills to take a proactive approach in serving our partners, authors, and readers. Communication and organisational skills backed by experience are essential, as is a good understanding of the scientist’s expectations for a research journal. The Publisher role is an opportunity to develop your career in a leading international scientific publisher.

You should also have the following skills and experience:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in scientific, technical and medical (STM) publishing.
  • Understanding of the priorities and expectations of an academic research journal.
  • Business acumen with the ability to grasp publishing finance including P&L, and develop business plans for new journals growth.
  • Exceptional communication, networking and society partnership skills and experience, with the ability to build effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong customer focus.
  • Willingness to travel to meetings and conferences worldwide.
  • Experience working with remote teams.
