As a University of Excellence, Universität Hamburg is one of the strongest research universities in Germany. As a flagship university in the greater Hamburg region, it nurtures innovative, co-operative contacts to partners within and outside academia. It also provides and promotes sustainable education, knowledge and knowledge exchange locally, nationally and internationally.

The Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences invites applications for a

Professorship (W3) for Experimental Physics

commencing as soon as possible, ref. no. 2348/W3.

The Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe is one of four clusters of excellence at Universität Hamburg. The cluster aims to research the relationship between the fundamental properties of elementary particles and the evolution of the universe, particularly the connection between mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology. Research areas include Higgs physics, dark matter, gravitational waves, and mathematical physics.

Responsibilities

The faculty is seeking a candidate with an outstanding research background who will strengthen the Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe and thematically shape its future profile. Research topics of particular interest are the development of innovative laboratory experiments for precision tests of the standard model, the search for physics models beyond the standard model, in particular as an explanation for dark matter, and gravitational wave detection.

The professorship is located in the Department of Physics. We expect the successful candidate to take part in the University’s core research area Particle, Astro- and Mathematical Physics. We further expect the successful candidate to collaborate with research groups at the University and at DESY at the joint Science City Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. We ask candidates to outline relevant possibilities for collaboration in their application.

Finally, the successful candidate is expected to engage in teaching duties in all subjects offered by the Department of Physics—including lectures, practical courses, seminars, and supervising final theses.

Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

Requirements

Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in Section 15 HmbHG.

Additional criteria

Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects. The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives.

Non-German-speaking post holders are expected to acquire the language skills necessary to teach in German (Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within two years of commencing employment.

Following hearings to evaluate knowledge and expertise, management and human resources skills will be assessed by an assessment center.

In accordance with Section 14 subsection 3 sentence 3 HmbHG, Universität Hamburg seeks to increase the proportion of women in teaching and research and encourages female academics to apply.

Suitable disabled candidates or applicants with equivalent status with comparable qualifications, abilities, and experience receive preference in the application process.

For further information, please contact Prof. Dr Peter Schleper at peter.schleper@physik.uni-hamburg.de.

The application deadline is 31 December 2020. Please submit your application with your CV, list of publications, teaching experience, successful external funding record, copies of certification and documents, three representative publications, teaching and research plans, additional evidence of skills and experience, such as presentations, posters, significant roles held in organizations, etc. where available, and the reference number 2348/W3, preferably by e-mail in a single PDF file, to Bewerbungen@uni-hamburg.de or by post to:
