The Enrico Fermi Institute of the University of Chicago is seeking applicants for a position as a Postdoctoral Scholar in the field of experimental high-energy particle physics.

The successful applicant will participate in the instrumentation, physics data analysis, and detector commissioning activities with the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva, Switzerland. The ATLAS Experiment is expected to resume operation and physics data collection in mid-2021 and to conduct detailed measurements of the Standard Model of Particle Physics as well as searches for New Physics Beyond the Standard Model. Detector Maintenance and Operation activities for the Hadronic (Tile) Calorimeter, and Installation and Commissioning activities for the Global Feature EXtraction (gFEX) Level 1 hardware trigger system are two of the primary active instrumentation activities ongoing at Chicago. In addition, upgrades of the electronics for the Tile Calorimeter, Calorimeter Trigger, and Hardware Track Trigger systems in preparation for the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) constitute major long-term activities in the Chicago ATLAS Group.

The ideal candidate will have experience in instrumentation and hardware, as well as physics data analysis, publication, and dissemination of results. They will take the lead in local hardware and software development as well as detector testing and commissioning. They will be expected to work closely with graduate and undergraduate students, engineers, as well as International Collaborators on the ATLAS Experiment. Candidates will also be expected to travel frequently, or relocate, to the site of the experimental apparatus in Geneva, Switzerland.

The position will start in Summer of 2020, though there is some flexibility to accommodate other schedules. Review of applications will begin July 10th, 2020.

This posting will remain open until a suitable candidate has been selected. Any questions can be directed to Prof. David W. Miller using the contact information below.

A Ph.D. or an equivalent degree in physics related-fields is required to be eligible, though appointment at this rank is restricted to those less than seven years beyond the attainment of a Ph.D.
