Your role and responsibilities

IBM Research seeks three postdoctoral researchers in scientific computing, with strong preference for candidates with backgrounds in gravitation, fluid dynamics, and scientific AI. You will join the newly-funded project “Discovering rare, extreme dynamics in large-scale computational models”, and work to make world-class, original contributions to the field of physics-informed AI.

Responsibilities include

  • Developing theoretical models and algorithms.
  • Collaborating with colleagues across IBM’s global research labs as well as academic partners and clients.
  • Publishing, presenting, and/or patenting research results.

Required technical and professional expertise

  • A PhD in Physics or closely related field.
  • Proven hands on development of scientific software development in C/C++, Fortran, or Python.
  • Proven expertise in High Performance Computing.
  • A background in either gravitation or fluid dynamics (any subfield/application), documented by a publication record commensurate to your career stage.

Preferred technical and professional experience

  • Proven contributions to open-source software projects.
  • Proven expertise in collaborating with large, distributed teams.
  • Previous experience or motivation to work in industrial research, and/or an overlap with existing IBM research focus areas, such or AI and cloud computing.

About business unit

IBM Research at Daresbury is a small team of about 30 researchers who are working on a collaborative research programme with the UK Government and a number of industrial partners/collaborators/clients.

We are part of the global IBM research team of around 3,000 researcher based on 5 continents. The focus of our research is around the use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, high performance computing and modelling & simulation to provide solutions to industrial research challenges from a wide range of industries including manufacturing, pharmaceutical and aerospace.
