We offer a working environment where individuals can cultivate their skills, do meaningful work, and develop professionally. Our university’s several specialized research and service units enable extensive and diverse development and career opportunities for experts in various fields.

Kvantum Institute is one of the four strategic focus institutes supporting high-quality research, coordinating multidisciplinary research activities and doctoral training. Kvantum’s science-based expertise meets global challenges in the focus areas Sustainable materials and systems and Changing climate and northern environment. The Institute promotes interdisciplinary networking of research groups as well as co-operation between groups and national and international partners.

We are now looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher and a Doctoral Student in theory of continuously observed quantum matter with superconducting circuits.

Description of the positions

The Postdoctoral Researcher:
Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit is looking for a talented postdoctoral researcher interested in theoretical and computational aspects of continuously observed quantum matter in the context of superconducting circuits. The full-time position is for two years beginning on 1 January 2021.

The research profile of the successful candidate should complement the theoretical and computational physics groups at the Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit. The focus of the researcher will be in open quantum systems, condensed matter physics, superconducting quantum devices and quantum information. The position is in the research project of “Continuously observed quantum matter with superconducting circuits” led by Academy of Finland Research Fellow Matti Silveri and funded by the Kvantum Institute of the University of Oulu.

The postdoctoral researcher will carry out research work within the research team, publish research results in leading international scientific journals, take part in funding acquisition, contribute in teaching (5% of the total yearly working hours) and supervision. In addition, the postdoctoral research may participate in other tasks of the research unit.

The Doctoral Student:
Nano and Molecular Systems Research unit is looking for a talented and motivated doctoral student interested in theoretical and computational aspects of continuously observed quantum matter in the context of superconducting circuits. The full-time position is for four years beginning on 1 January 2021.

The research focus of the doctoral student will be in open quantum systems, condensed matter physics, superconducting quantum devices and quantum information. The position is in the research project of “Continuously observed quantum matter with superconducting circuits” led by Academy of Finland Research Fellow Matti Silveri and funded by the Kvantum Institute of the University of Oulu.

The doctoral student will carry out research work and doctoral studies within the research team, publish research results in leading international scientific journals, take part in funding acquisition when applicable, contribute in teaching by assisting in courses (5% of the total yearly working hours) and supervise Bachelor and Master’s theses. In addition, the doctoral student may participate in other tasks of the research unit.

Description of the research unit

Superconducting Quantum Simulations and Computing Group (www.oulu.fi/nanomo/quantum) is a theoretical physics group in Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit. The group focuses in phenomena of many-body physics and open quantum systems in arrays of superconducting quantum devices, bosonic quantum-error correction and superconducting quantum circuits. Research methods combine numerical, analytical and collaborative experimental approaches. The group works towards understanding and accelerating near-future superconducting quantum simulation and quantum computing advances. Recent research highlights are many-body localization with superconducting transmon arrays, broadband Lamb shift in an engineered quantum system and theory of quantum circuit refrigeration based on superconducting-normal-metal hybrid circuits. Nano and Molecular Systems Research unit is a highly international research environment formed by two professors, three associate professors and approximately 40 other researchers. The research of the unit is focused on material science from quantum to molecular level.
