Position description

The Argonne National Laboratory Physics Division is seeking outstanding candidates for 1 or more postdoctoral positions in the Medium Energy Physics Group to contribute to the scientific programs of CLAS12, Hall C, and SoLID at Jefferson Lab, and the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) at BNL. The positions are for two years, with the option to extend for a third year contingent on funding and performance. Applications received on or before October 30th will receive full consideration.

The Medium Energy Physics has a broad-ranging program in hadron and nuclear physics, leading electron scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab in Halls A, B and C, including CLAS12 and SoLID. The group is also involved in parton distribution measurements (transverse and longitudinal) at Fermilab, the MUSE experiment at PSI, the NEXT 0νββ experiment and an in-house program to measure the Radium EDM. The successful candidate will play a key role in our extensive program in Hall B.  Topics include the study of the proton’s quark dynamics in SIDIS (RG-A), a study of parton distributions in K-SIDIS (RG-B) and the preparation for the ALERT (RG-L) program which will study the 3D structure of light nuclei.

Additionally, the successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team to develop the scientific program of the EIC, leveraging the world-class high-performance computing (HPC) facilities at Argonne. These consist of the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), which will host the first exa-scale computer in the USA, and the Laboratory Computing Resource Center (LCRC). The successful candidate will have opportunities to develop leadership in experimental nuclear physics. The Argonne EIC group is a close collaboration between members of the Medium Energy, Theory and Accelerator R&D groups members from the Argonne Physics Division, which has a long history of leadership in nuclear science.

Interested applicants must complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the application profile at http://www.anl.gov/careers/apply-job/postdoctoral-applicants (or search for requisition number #408732 at https://www.anl.gov/hr/postdoctoral-applicants).
  2. Email a curriculum vitae with short (1 page) statement of research interest to Zein-Eddine Meziani (zmeziani@anl.gov).
  3. Arrange for three letters of recommendations to be sent to Zein-Eddine Meziani (zmeziani@anl.gov).

Position Requirements

Qualifications

  • PhD in experimental nuclear or particle physics (by the time of the appointment).
  • Knowledge of Linux, C++ and HPC and Python is highly desirable.

The Physics Division (PHY) is interested in hiring multiple Postdoctoral Appointees for this opening.
