The accelerator division has as its mission the design and operation of cutting-edge accelerator facilities as well as accelerator R&D. PETRA IV is the planned new synchrotron radiation facility which is currently in the technical design phase. The goal of the project is to replace the 2.3 km long PETRA III storage ring with a new ultra-low emittance ring based on multi-bend achromat technology.

Electron storage rings have been instruments of choice for precision measurements both in High Energy Physics colliding beam experiments, as well as experiments with synchrotron radiation in materials science, life science, and others. The new generation of storage rings aims to push the limits of the luminosity and the size of the electron beam that can be achieved. Two of such planned machines are the e+/e Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) and PETRA IV. The FCC-ee is a proposed 100km circumference collider for precision studies and rare decay observations in the range of 90 to 350 GeV centre of mass energy with luminosities in the order of 1035 cm−2 s−1 (https://home.cern/science/accelerators/future-circular-collider). PETRA IV is a planned 6 GeV synchrotron light source at DESY, Hamburg which is expected to replace the existing PETRA III facility and commence operation at DESY in 2027. Once operational, PETRA IV will be the brightest hard x-ray synchrotron source worldwide (http://www.desy.de/research/facilities__projects/petra_iv/index_eng.html).

This project would allow the PhD student the opportunity to work at world class facilities (DESY, Cockcroft Institute and CERN), and to work on research crucial for both particle colliders and synchrotron light sources.

A common challenge of such low emittance storage rings is their high sensitivity to errors and the need for precise control of beam parameters such as the emittance. Novel algorithms for orbit correction, linear optics correction, beam-based optimization of nonlinear dynamics and emittance tuning will be important to reliably run these facilities. Such algorithms rely upon multi-parametric optimisation problems with multiple unknowns under dynamically changing conditions such as changing ambient temperatures, and power supply instabilities.

The position

  •     Study advanced optics correction and beam-based optimization methods for future low emittance storage rings
  •     Perform experimental demonstration of the developed techniques at PETRA III

Requirements

  •     Masters degree or equivalent in physics, computer science, mathematics or engineering
  •     Preferably prior experience in one of the following fields: accelerator physics and technology, optimization methods, dynamical system
  •     Good written and oral English communication skills
