Job advert description

Ever wanted to work for a company that contributes to the fundamental understanding of the universe? Want to be a part of the team that supports the physics community in communicating their research to as broad an audience possible? We have the right job for you!

IOP Publishing (IOPP) is looking for a Product Manager to own and manage the technology products that facilitate the peer review of manuscripts on behalf of hundreds of thousandsof authors, reviewers and our in-house editorial staff.

IOPP has a mission to become the leading authority on peer review: this role is key in supporting that goal, ensuring that our customers receive the best possible experience of peer review during their time working with us.

Where does this role fit in at IOP Publishing?

Peer review is the true engine room of the publishing business, helping to safeguard the quality, validity, authority and rigour of academic work. The peer review system and related products are where authors submit and reviewers assess scientific manuscripts, all supported by our in-house team of editorial staff. This is a primary touch point for the scientific community – whether they are early career researchers or highly experience academics – and is therefore of fundamental importance for our customers and our business.

The user-base of researchers interacting with our peer review systems is truly global: the products support the publication workflow for more than 70 journals across the physical sciences. In order to make that happen, the Product Manager works directly with an internal scrum product team as well as a key technology partner in the USA to ensure that the speed of the review process, and the quality of the editorial decisions meet the needs of the academic community.

Internally, the Peer Review Product Manager works closely with the Reviewer Engagement Manager, Research Integrity and Inclusion Manager and in-house editorial staff to ensure that not only are we accurately reflecting the needs of researchers, but also that our products can support any related business change. The right candidate will be able to consider feedback from both internal users and stakeholders as well as external customers, developing the systems and processes to meet the wide variety of needs.

Finally, as we move into a world where Open Access publication is becoming increasingly important, we want to make sure that we have the right products and tools to support researchers and our internal teams in the future. As one of the key product managers in this area you will get the chance to shape the strategic direction of the peer review product space, working with our current and future technology providers to deliver the right solutions for IOPP over the next 5-10 years.

Who do we need?

An ideal candidate will be:

  • Highly organised and capable of juggling multiple priorities.
  • Able to manage a product backlog, roadmap and product strategy.
  • A great communicator: as adept at presenting as they are at defining a process in writing.
  • Used to balancing the needs of multiple customer groups.
  • Able to use analytical and reporting tools to assess customer journeys/their needs.
  • Experienced working in agile teams, ideally with Scrum or similar.
  • Able to drive work with external suppliers and negotiate effectively.

The right candidate will have experience of interviewing customers, collating and prioritising their feedback and acting on the insights. They will also have similar experience of extracting insights from data sets and survey results and be able to draw conclusions that will inform the direction of their product roadmap.

We would love to hear from you and see what you have to offer.

What does a typical week look like?

As a product manager in IOPP no week will be the same, but you can expect to experience any number of the following:

  • Working with the product team during their regular Agile ceremonies, leading on the priority of the things that the team focus on.
  • Setting your roadmap priorities for the coming sprints and upcoming quarter.
  • Planning with the team and the wider business for the implementation of company-wide initiatives.
  • Engaging with the internal teams that use the peer review products to understand how you can optimise the workflows to meet their needs and the needs of our customers.
  • Talking to our customers in face-to-face interviews as well as reviewing feedback and eliciting insight from surveys and our business intelligence data.
  • Working with publishing partners across the globe to bring them in to the IOPP ecosystem.

About the benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, we offer employees a comprehensive benefits package including an excellent pension scheme, discretionary annual bonus scheme, private medical insurance, life assurance and generous annual leave, and a range of flexible benefits including cycle to work and gym membership.

Our modern and contemporary offices are based in the thriving city centre of Bristol, a stone’s throw away from Temple Meads train station, and within walking distance of Cabot Circus shopping centre, and numerous cafés and restaurants. Named on more than one occasion as the best city in the UK to live in, Bristol is a cosmopolitan and creative city boasting a historic harbour, internationally renowned cultural institutions and home to world-class festivals and events.

This role is based at our Bristol office. Blended and flexible working will be considered with regular office attendance informed by business needs and subject to the local COVID-19 situation.
