The Marketing Manager (MM) works with the Associate Director CEM (AD) to create the strategic vision for their product portfolio and is responsible for the budget, performance and day to day management of all marketing activities required to deliver on that vision.

They are accountable for achieving annual marketing objectives and KPIs through the implementation of multi-channel marketing campaigns (across email, social, search, in-person and virtual events, etc.), and manage the delivery of this through their team.

Marketing strategies will support the primary business goal of winning and retaining customers: primarily authors, reviewers, readers, and society partners, whilst also providing support for the winning and retaining of library customers. Integral to this is the need to maximise content growth for the journals in their portfolio through the engagement of researchers  with IOPP’s products and services.

The MM sets the standards for other team members to ensure best practice activities, providing effective line management to the marketers and acting as marketing expert for the portfolio across the wider business.

Key job accountabilities include

  • Develop and implement objectives-driven global marketing strategies to improve positioning, awareness and impact with customers. This could include increasing engagement and submissions, growing the number of reviewers, driving readership (usage) and citations.
  • Collaborate with the editorial teams on product positioning and campaign requirements.
  • Plan and prioritise the marketing of products based on their classification e.g. ‘intensive’, ‘standard’ or ‘light-touch’.
  • Collaborate with the Head of MarComms, Data Marketing Manager and Library Marketing teams, where relevant, on integrated, multi-channel marketing campaigns to support campaign goals and ensure successful engagement with target customers.
  • Represent marketing function in meetings with key stakeholders.
  • Deliver presentations and produce reports as required.
  • Responsible for customer-facing content and marketing materials for portfolio based on IOPP brand guidelines (where appropriate).
  • Ensure consistent and useful measuring and reporting of all marketing activity (working closely with the Data Marketing team).
  • Make data-driven decisions when planning campaigns and activities to optimise performance. 
  • Work with the senior marketing team and other key stakeholders to develop a strong understanding of our customers to help us support their needs through services, communications and product development.
  • Monitor competitor activity to feed into overall market intelligence.

About you

Successful applicants should demonstrate the following:

  • Extensive experience in creating and implementing marketing strategies and tactical plans.
  • A good understanding of Open Access and wider STM publishing and research landscape.
  • Experience of working with society partners in the provision of marketing services.
  • People management experience.
  • Experience preparing and managing to a budget.
  • Proven ability to motivate a team to success.
  • Collaborative approach to team management and working with peers.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to generate ideas and solutions.
  • Strong communication skills in all forms, including excellent copy writing and presentation skills.
  • Continuous improvement: proactively seek opportunities to deliver efficiencies and effectiveness.
  • Ideally holds a professional qualification in marketing and equivalent work experience in marketing.

The working pattern for this role will require 28 hours minimum a week, ideally 35 hours per week.
