The hardware in the loop (HWIL) department is a unique facility that integrates complex missile subsystems and simulates their dynamic flights as if in a real-world environment.

In the labs there are electro-optic (EO), LASER and radio frequency (RF) devices, anechoic chambers and multiple Carco 3-axis hydraulic motion tables. The small, but versatile, team have a mixture of technical expertise that enables them to invent the electronics and equipment needed for the labs, design the experiments, create custom software and hardware simulations, and deliver the analysed outputs to support expensive company trials.

What’s the opportunity?

In HWIL there are a vast number of opportunities to get hands-on. Every member of the team has the ability to work on real time computing, software coding and mathematical modelling. As a graduate you will get involved in testing missile hardware subsystems (Seeker, Inertial Measurement Unit and Missile Computer), the design and control of target scene generators to emit infrared or radio frequency radiation and control of hydraulic motion tables to simulate dynamic flight.

HWIL supports and develops a broad range of skills, and is suitable for graduates from a wide range of problem solving backgrounds.

On the programme you will have the opportunity to develop many different engineering skills including complex function integration, designing bespoke equipment and applying new knowledge to create, set up and action test procedures. You will also work on:

  • Complex function integration.
  • Coding test software, data analysis scripts and control systems (C++, MATLAB, CAD, Linux).
  • Learning communication protocols (e.g. RS422, Ethernet, MODBUS).
  • Applying new knowledge to create, set up and action test procedure.
  • Electronic design.
  • Mechanical design.
  • Workshop skills (such as purchasing and designing lab equipment and cables using pillar drills, hand tools, soldering etc).
  • Technical report writing to support trials reviews.

Charterships and accreditation are fully supported and 100% of fees are paid during the graduate scheme.

HWIL are very versatile team, all at different points within their career and each member has their own unique set of skills. What are we looking for?

  • Degree qualified in engineering or technical subject (engineering, physics, mathematics, aerospace, electronics, computing, control theory, systems etc) to minimum 2.2 level.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Interest in solving problems.
  • Basic experience of Matlab/Simulink and coding.
