The Particle Physics Department (PPD) is leading and supporting the particle physics community in the UK and internationally. The department is involved in all major experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and their upgrades, as well as current and future accelerator-based neutrino experiments. We also operate the Boulby Underground Laboratory and have taken a major role in dark matter experiments. We are leading the development of future detector technology and supporting the computing needs of the UK and international communities.

The department has a leading role in the preparation for future neutrino experiments (DUNE/HyperK) and we want to strengthen our involvement in the Japan-based experiments.

About the role

We are looking for an inspirational internationally recognized leader with expertise both in the physics exploitation of neutrino experiments as well as in the development of novel technologies and the design of neutrino oscillation experiments. The individual is expected to lead the T2K/SK/HyperK group in PPD and define its future direction taking the UK and international context into account.

You will participate and provide leadership in the operations and physics analysis of the T2K and/or SK experiments, as well as providing leadership for the group, including development of the team and defining its future direction. We expect you to play a leading role in the development of new technologies for future experiments, work closely with colleagues in the UK and be recognized as an international expert and leader in the field.

About you

You will have a PhD in experimental particle physics or a related field, as well as relevant experience of working in large-scale experiments. You will be expected to have a proven record of high-quality research and leadership in experimental particle physics or particle astrophysics and experience with hardware development.

You should have proven ability in the design, construction, and commissioning of particle physics experiments plus experience in data analysis.

The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with academic and technical staff. You must be strongly self-motivated, able to motivate and guide the work of others and be a team player. Having a strategic view of the field and being able to develop a strategy for future activities in the UK and international context is essential.
