Fully-funded 4-year PhDs and EngDs in Ultrasonic Engineering open for application until 31st July.

Ultrasonics is the science and technology of sound at frequencies above the audible range. It is vitally important across many sectors from robotics in the oil and gas industry to medical imaging. The universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde have combined research expertise across medical and industrial ultrasonic engineering to lead the Centre of Doctoral Training in Future Ultrasonic Engineering (FUSE).

Alongside over 20 ultrasonics academics, we are seeking PhD and EngD students to join FUSE and work with 30 external organisations, from innovative micro-companies to exciting multinationals, on real projects, enabling systematic training of a new generation of leaders in ultrasonics research, engineering, and product development.

Programme and benefits

  • A four-year, tax-free stipend of approx. £15,609 per annum.
  • A year’s foundation training and introduction to ultrasonic engineering.
  • A three-year research project in collaboration with at least one of the CDT partners, which includes SMEs, the NHS, and multinational corporations.

  • Industry speakers and visits introducing them to real-world problems.
  • Professional skills development such as data management, time management, Prince2 Foundation in Project Management and communications.
  • Support for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer with iMechE MPDS.
  • Option to gain STEM Ambassador status.

Key areas for applied ultrasonics include:

  • Medical and industrial imaging.
  • Treatments and processes.
  • Cleaning.
  • Robotics.
  • Sonar.
  • Haptics.
  • Energy transfer.
  • Communications.

The multiple needs of these varied sectors will be met by novel ultrasonics research in:

  • Materials.
  • Microfabricated devices.
  • Microelectronics.
  • Instrumentation.
  • Software and applications.

Funding and eligibility

Funding is available to cover tuition fees for UK Home applicants and a stipend at the Research Council rate (£15, 609 for Session 2021/22). To be eligible for a fully-funded Home studentship, you must be a UK citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past three years, or an EU applicant with ‘settled status’ (having lived in the UK for five years) or ‘pre-settled status’ (having lived in the UK for a minimum of three years). Candidates with indefinite leave to remain or enter the UK are also eligible for funding.

Please note: Only fully-funded studentships for Home applicants remain for a 2021 start. International candidates may still apply if they have a fund source independent of FUSE CDT or apply in 2022/23.

Applicants must have or expect to obtain the equivalent of a 1st or 2.1 degree in an appropriate engineering or science discipline.
