Fermilab is seeking outstanding candidates for a deputy division head for magnet technology in the applied physics and superconducting technology division (APSTD).

The position provides unique opportunities to contribute to and shape the world-class magnet accelerator technology enterprise, including research into high field magnets to enable future accelerators and non-accelerator fundamental physics experiments, as well as the production of custom designed focusing and steering magnets for various accelerators.

You will

  • Provide oversight and line management for the magnet technology part of APSTD.
  • Work with APSTD division head on strategic vision/planning to ensure a strong future for magnets at Fermilab.
  • Participate in development of plans and procedures through which the division delivers required services to implement the laboratory’s current and planned experimental and operating programs.
  • Act on behalf of the division head as assigned or in the division head’s absence.
  • Participate in director’s meetings and other discussions as a member of the laboratory’s management team when the division head is not available.
  • Represent the division on scientific, operational and/or programmatic issues as assigned.
  • Conduct specific scientific, operational or management studies with respect to the activities of the division as assigned.
  • Organize, oversee, and direct the activities of division personnel to accomplish the short and long term responsibilities of the division in support of the laboratory mission.
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable laboratory policies, federal/state regulation, the Department of Energy Contract and DOE orders covering assigned areas; implement existing policies, procedures and practices to ensure that division operations and services are safely and effectively provided; recommend changes as appropriate.
  • Manage the responsibilities of assigned Departments; ensure that employees are adequately skilled, trained and that all activities are conducted in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Oversee and is responsible for safety, quality and contractor assurance programs and plans for assigned departments.
  • Plan and manage the department(s) budget(s); approve costs and ensure that expenditures are appropriate for continuation of operations, provision of services and in line with budget.
  • Be responsible for all personnel actions for subordinate departments including hiring, promotions, pay increases, performance reviews, disciplinary actions and terminations.
  • Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

We are looking for

  • PhD in physics, materials science, engineering or other relevant disciplines.
  • Minimum seven years of post-PhD experience.
  • Demonstrated record of successful research in magnet technology with the international stature, as evidenced by the publication record, presentations, awards, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience of successful management of groups consisting of scientists, engineers, technicians with the goal of achieving research or technological goals.
