The Center for Quantum Science and Quantum Computing (QSC) of the universities of Basel (Switzerland) and Freiburg (Germany), embedded in EUCOR – The European Campus, invites applications for up to six Georg H Endress Postdoc Fellowships. The Center seeks to attract outstanding and highly motivated early-career scientists in QSC to engage in cutting-edge projects involving existing research groups at Basel and Freiburg. The ideal Georg H Endress Fellow has recently finished a PhD in experimental or theoretical physics (or related areas) and is eager to shape the academic environment in research and teaching at both nodes. Fellows will be appointed for up to three years, and will be selected on the basis of scientific excellence as well as quality and innovative potential of proposed research in the QSC target areas of the Center, such as quantum information processing (quantum computation, simulation, and metrology) in particular also with spins, quantum technologies, complex quantum systems, quantum materials, and other emerging topics in quantum science.

The Georg H Endress Postdoc Cluster at the Basel-Freiburg Center for QSC on EUCOR – The European Campus is a dedicated one-year initiative to foster and educate outstanding young scientists to provide the academic talent and technology skills for the rapidly developing field of QSC. The Georg H Endress Fellows will complement and expand the present strategic strengths in research at the Center. In two previous calls, the Center has already appointed 13 outstanding fellows and is now opening a third call aiming to appoint up to six additional fellows.

We are aiming broadly at the second generation of quantum technologies, exploring control of the quantum properties of elementary building blocks, and of their orchestrated interaction, to enhance targeted functional properties upon integration. Recently, the Swiss National Competence Center of Research in quantum computation with silicon spins was launched with leading house Basel, https://spin.unibas.ch.

Applications contain the candidate’s CV and a short (up to two pages) research statement, in one pdf document. The research statement should identify one or more QSC-PI (for a list of PIs, see https://www.eucor-uni.org/g-h-e-postdoc-cluster) the candidate would like to work with, and suggest a potential partner group with complementary expertise at the respective other QSC node if possible. Furthermore, candidates are requested to arrange for two confidential letters of reference, which need to bear the author’s institutional letterhead and (digital) signature. Applications and reference letters shall be submitted online, via https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/14084. Women and minority scientists are particularly encouraged to apply.

The application deadline is 15 January 2021. Applications will continue to be accepted and evaluated until the positions are filled. For information, please visit https://www.eucor-uni.org/g-h-e-postdoc-cluster or contact us on endress-fellows@unibas.ch.
