The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 22 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

Context and job description

You will participate in the maintenance and development of the beamline, provide support to the beamline scientific staff and external scientific visitors, and closely interact with various ESRF support groups in seeking timely help for repairs and preventive maintenance tasks. Together with the beamline scientists, you will be required to participate in the development of sample environments specific to the beamline.

ID02 is a high resolution X-ray scattering instrument featuring a 34 m long detector tube combined with state-of-the-art detectors. The beamline is primarily dedicated to research on soft materials and biological specimens. Daily tasks include surveillance of correct functioning of ancillary equipment related to the detector tube and advanced X-ray detectors, and beamline vacuum system, management of sample shipment from users, and installation of sample environments for user experiments. In addition, during the synchrotron shutdown period you will be required to undertake essential repair tasks, preventive maintenance and if necessary installation of new equipment.
