About us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

About the role

We now have an opportunity for a Beamline Scientist to work on Beamline I11 at Diamond.

Beamline I11 is a dedicated powder diffraction beamline. This beamline performs experiments to study the structures of materials from a vast range of scientific fields such as gas storage, catalysis, energy materials, metals and alloys and pharmaceuticals. The beamline has just completed a major upgrade including the replacement of the monochromator and diffractometer, and will soon benefit from extra intensity at high energy with the installation of a superconducting undulator and the capability for ultrafast data collections with a new, bespoke position sensitive detector.

The Beamline Scientist will contribute to the technical development of the beamline, assist in the installation and commissioning of beamline components, provide user support, and carry out research in areas relevant to the beamline.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Provide beamline operational support including responsibility for day-to-day safe operation.
  • Act as a single point of contact for selected user experiments.
  • Collaborate on beamline upgrades and development projects.
  • Develop own research in an area relevant to the beamline and disseminate the results and become recognised in this field of expertise.
  • Manage the development, procurement, testing, installation, and maintenance of bespoke scientific equipment and software to perform novel experiments.
  • Give advice to users on proposal submissions.
  • Engage actively with new and existing user communities who will benefit from I11 through participation in conferences and workshops.

About you

We are seeking a Beamline Scientist with a strong background in X-ray powder diffraction and experience with analysis software such as GSAS(-II) and TOPAS.

You should have a PhD degree in chemistry, physics, materials science or a related field.

Experience with synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction is essential. A demonstrated independent research program, knowledge of X-ray instrumentation, and prior experience of supporting research at a facility are desirable.

You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills, and the ability to interact effectively with staff and facility users at all levels.

Benefits

Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
