The Department of Physics, at the University of South Dakota (USD), invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track position at all levels, with expertise at the junction of particle, nuclear, and astro-physics, or related fields in materials science, with a preferred starting date of Fall 2021.

The candidate will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate classes in face-to-face and online environments. A PhD in physics or a related field is required. Postdoctoral experience is preferred. To be hired at a senior level, the successful candidate needs to have a well-established research programme and is expected to mentor and support junior faculty members.

With its proximity to the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), USD Physics has a focus on underground science, with the majority of our faculty members working in the areas of neutrino physics, nuclear physics, and particle astrophysics. USD Physics is involved in underground experiments and consortiums such as the Majorana Demonstrator, LEGEND, SuperCDMS, LUX/LZ, nEXO, DUNE, and GEMADARC. USD plays a leading role in the development of germanium-based experiments as the only US university growing high-purity Ge crystals and making Ge detectors.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is subject to final budgetary approval by the university.

A complete application consists of:

  • A cover letter.
  • A current curriculum vitae (including a list of publications).
  • A statement of research interests.
  • A statement of teaching interests, experience and vision (including mentoring, outreach, and promotion of diversity).

The first review of applications will begin on 15 February 2021 and will continue thereafter until a successful candidate is found.
