Position overview

We are seeking an Accelerator Science Deputy Director to lead the development of a vision for the future of accelerator science and technology at SLAC. The Science Deputy is a core member of the Accelerator Directorate senior management team and reports to the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for the Accelerator Directorate. The successful candidate will be a distinguished, internationally recognized accelerator scientist with experience across a broad range of accelerator science and technology.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, a DOE national lab operated by Stanford University, is home to over five decades of excellence advancing the frontiers of accelerator science and technology. The lab’s world-leading accelerator science program continues to define advanced accelerator concepts of the future and the development of critical accelerator technologies to define and support new facilities. The lab’s capabilities, tools and expertise serve a global user community in studies ranging from fundamental accelerator and beam physics to colliders to ultrafast X-ray science.

This is a very exciting time for accelerator S&T at SLAC, with a wide variety of projects underway. We are the home to the world’s first hard X-ray FEL, LCLS, which recently celebrated its 10th year of operation. The ongoing LCLS-II project will deliver a new superconducting accelerator complex that will increase the FEL X-ray repetition rate and average power by almost four orders of magnitude. A subsequent FEL upgrade to enable the delivery of high energy X-rays (LCLS-II-HE) is also underway, opening up a multitude of experiments with atomic resolution and femtosecond precision. SLAC also operates FACET-II and SSRL. FACET-II is the nation’s premier user facility to study ultra-high-gradient electron beam driven plasma wakefield acceleration with a diverse international user program. SSRL continues as one of the nation’s top synchrotron light sources, serving thousands of users every year.

Your specific responsibilities include

  • Develop a long term vision for accelerator science and technology at SLAC.
  • Work with the wider SLAC team and accelerator community, identify prioritized research directions and identify new projects and facilities in order to solve the grand scientific challenges of interest to our sponsors and the nation.
  • Lead interactions with key funding agencies to promote and advocate for our vision of the future of accelerator science and technology.
  • Reach out to the wider research community to inform and expand the accelerator base for AD to ensure long-term alignment to the nation’s most compelling scientific objectives.
  • Provide scientific direction to accelerator scientists, to guide and develop their careers and maximize the scientific benefit provided to our accelerator program.
  • Drive the continual development of in-house scientific excellence and innovation in our scientific and technical staff.
  • Foster a highly collaborative, positive, respectful and inclusive culture in all aspects of our work.

Note: Appointment at the Distinguished Scientist level is a regular-continuing position and requires an achieved recognition of leadership nationally and/or internationally, as a result of original developments in field of expertise.

To be successful in this position you will bring

  • A PhD in physics, engineering or related field with a least 15 years of relevant experience in the following areas:
    – Accelerator science and technology.
    – Leading and/or managing scientific and technical research groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to define and prioritize a complex portfolio of accelerator research programs, while balancing the demands of near-term deliverables with long-term vision.
  • A strong collaborator with the ability to bring together diverse teams, influence outcomes, and manage conflicting opinions.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills that can secure the trust of a broad accelerator research community and manage any conflicts in a manner that reinforces our strong commitment to a respectful, inclusive and diverse workplace.
  • Work effectively with our DOE partners and other government agencies.
