UNESP is a public and free (no tuition or any kind of charge) university maintained by the government of the state of São Paulo. Founded in 1976, it is formed by 34 units in 24 cities of the state of São Paulo (Presidente Prudente is one of those 24 cities where there is one of those 34 units). In 2014, UNESP took up the challenge of filling 50% of the vacancies with students from the public-education system, reserving 35% of these vacancies for students who declared themselves to be black, brown or indigenous. The goal was achieved in 2018, turning UNESP into a more diverse and inclusive institution. UNESP is listed among the three largest and most important Brazilian universities, consisting of around 3700 professors, 38,000 undergraduate students and 14,000 postgraduate students
