Department: Propulsion Futures Beacon (Physics & Astronomy)

Salary: £39609 to £48677 per annum, depending on skills and experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.

The opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Propulsion Futures Beacon of Excellence, which aims to drive the discovery and translation of new materials, components and technologies for future, greener, electrified transportation.

Our prestigious internal fellowship schemes are a fundamental part of our Research Vision and aim to recruit the next generation of outstanding research leaders. We will be recruiting a diverse cohort of 100 Nottingham and Anne McLaren Research Fellows by the end of 2022. Beacon fellows will be supported to develop an independent research career, whilst actively contributing to the aims of the Beacon Research Programme. We support applicants from diverse career paths and background. Also, we welcome applications from those wishing to work part-time.

Strategic areas

We welcome experimental proposals on two-dimensional materials in the following areas:

  • Inorganic photovoltaics;
  • Thermoelectric phenomena;
  • Hydrogen storage and generation;
  • Epitaxial growth.

Research in these areas of science and technology may require the development and use of frontier instrumentation for synthesis and experimental analysis of new materials; the development of novel fabrication processes and technologies; the understanding and control of phenomena in classical and quantum science.

The fellowship will be based in the School of Physics, University of Nottingham.

We believe that diverse teams deliver the highest quality teaching, research and student experience. To achieve the University’s vision of being top ranked in all areas of Education and Student Experience and Knowledge Exchange, we are seeking applications from high quality scientists whose background, experience and identity broaden and enhance the diversity of our existing teams.

Each fellowship offers:

  • Three years independent funding to conduct research while based at the University of Nottingham.
  • Extensive career development support, including participation in a mentoring scheme.
  • Competitive salary set on the Research and Teaching Staff Scales Level 5 depending on experience.
  • The linking of the Fellowship to an established academic post (subject to winning a prestigious grant such as URF, ERC starter grant, etc.).
  • Research expenses totalling £75,000.
  • Additional childcare costs of up to £5,000 per annum.
  • Relocation expenses of up to £1,500.
  • Opportunities to spend periods of time at University of Nottingham Campuses in China and Malaysia.

Eligibility
Candidates must have been awarded their PhD. This scheme is aimed at early career researchers, and candidates do not normally have more than 8 year’s postdoctoral experience. However, there are no eligibility rules based on years of post-doctoral experience as this doesn’t allow for variations of career paths across disciplines. Candidates will be assessed on their quality, potential and track record, relative to their career stage.

Before applying

Please note, uploading the full application form is a requirement and we will not be able to consider your application if this is not provided. Applicants MUST discuss their research proposal with Prof Amalia Patane Amalia.Patane@nottingham.ac.uk prior to submitting their application.

How to apply:

Apply online, completing the short form and uploading your completed full application form.

Full application deadline 30th August 2019.
