Job ref: II-783/18

Technische Universität Berlin offers an open position:

Research Assistant - 0.75 working time - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen under the reserve that funds are granted

The successful applicant will become a member of the Collaborative Research Center ‘Correlated Magnetism’ (SFB1143) - a large research network organized by the Technical University Dresden, which involves several research institutes including the Technische Universität Berlin. The cooperation aims to discover and explore novel phenomena in magnetism such as states of matter based on topological order, and novel excitations with fractionalized quantum numbers. There are 19 projects and approximately 80 scientists including many PhD students. Scientific approaches cover a range of theoretical and experimental techniques, and a crucial aspect is the synthesis of novel magnetic materials which form the basis of experimental studies and the inspiration for theoretical models.

Faculty II - Institute of Solid State Physics (place of work is Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie) Reference number: II-783/19 (starting at the earliest possible / until 31 december 2022 / closing date for applications 07/06/19)

Working field: This open position lies in the project ‘Synthesis of unconventional magnetic materials’, whose goals are the synthesis, characterization and exploration of new magnetic materials with exotic properties formed from transition and rare earth metal oxides. Powder and single crystal growth will be achieved via a range of methods (solid state reaction, optical floating zone, Bridgman, Czochralski). The properties of these materials will be explored and characterized using various techniques (X-ray diffraction, magnetization, specific heat etc.) to identify interesting new phases. The candidate is expected to introduce his/her materials and will have the opportunity to work with the other scientists within the Collaborative Research Center and beyond. The primary workplace will be at Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin within the research institute of Prof. Bella Lake (https://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/forschung/oe/em/quanten/index_en.html) which hosts outstanding expertise and a range of synthesis and characterization apparatus. The candidate is expected to complete a PhD thesis during this time, which will be awarded by the Technische Universität Berlin.

  • successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in physics, chemistry or materials science; good grades desired
  • taken courses in condensed matter physics
  • a strong interest in experimental research
  • experience of experimental condensed matter research in particular inorganic material synthesis and magnetic measurements
  • good English language skills.
For further information please contact Prof. Dr. Bella Lake (bella.lake@helmholtz-berlin.de).

Please send your application with the reference number and the usual documents (a motivation letter, CV, copies of your Master or Diplom certificates and the contact details of at least two academic references) preferably by email in one single pdf file to bella.lake@helmholtz-berlin.de or in writing to Technische Universität Berlin - Der Präsident - Fakultät II, Institut für Festkörperphysik, Prof. Dr. Bella Lake, Sekr. EW 5-1, Hardenbergstr. 36, 10623 Berlin.

To ensure equal opportunities between women and men, applications by women with the required qualifications are explicitly desired. Qualified individuals with disabilities will be favored. The TU Berlin values the diversity of its members and is committed to the goals of equal opportunities.

Please send copies only. Original documents will not be returned.
