The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to develop, improve and operate the suite of particle / heavy ion accelerators used to carry out the program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); to support the experimental program including design, construction and operation of the beam transports to the experiments, plus support of detector and research needs of the experiments; to design and construct new accelerator facilities in support of the BNL and national missions. The C-A Department supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The department performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach. The Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening for a two-year term Post-doctoral Research Associate position to join the medium-term R&D effort with emphasis on the Electron-Ion Collider eRHIC. The successful candidate is expected to take part in the lattice design of the respective electron and hadron accelerators. In addition, the candidate will work on optimizing the dynamic aperture of the electron and hadron storage rings of the Electron Ion Collider eRHIC.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Take active part in accelerator lattice design effort • Perform dynamic aperture simulations to optimize the chromatic correction schemes in the various eRHIC accelerators
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ph.D. in Physics • Experience with collider accelerator lattice design • In-depth familiarity with accelerator design and simulation codes such as MAD-X, BMAD, or ELEGANT
• Experience with writing simulation codes • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interaction with a diverse group of scientists, engineers and technical staff
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Experience with programming languages such as Python or C • Hands-on experience with accelerator operations
BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.
