The KVI-Center for Advanced Radiation Technology (KVI-CART,) performs basic research on subatomic and astroparticle physics and application-driven research on accelerator physics and physics in medicine. KVI-CART operates a large research infrastructure, the AGOR cyclotron facility, which provides intermediate energy beams for research in a.o. radiation biology and medical radiation physics.

The KVI-CART Medical Physics group focuses on further improvement of proton therapy, in close collaboration with the Radiation Oncology and Cell Biology departments of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).

Job description
We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow (four years) for the development of a new state-of-the-art infrastructure for preclinical radiation biology research with particle beams at the AGOR cyclotron facility, IMPACT.

IMPACT will offer unique research opportunities for preclinical studies of normal tissue and tumor response to high accuracy image guided proton and helium irradiations.

IMPACT consists of a versatile new beam line; 3D X-ray and bioluminescence imagers at the irradiation position and image based irradiation planning tools. It will be built in collaboration with several external partners.
The project is funded by the Dutch cancer foundation KWF and is a collaboration between KVI-CART and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).

The successful candidate will take the lead in the validation of the irradiation planning tools and will strongly contribute to the development and validation of the irradiation modalities and the commissioning of the imagers.

You meet the following requirements:
• a PhD degree in Physics
• proven expertise in (medical) radiation physics; Monte Carlo simulations of radiation transport; radiation detection and dosimetry
• demonstrated experimental skills
• interest in imaging
• expertise in instrumentation development, incl. IT-aspects, is a strong asset
• postdoctoral work experience
• excellent command of English (spoken and written)
• result driven
• good communication skills
• team player with leadership qualities.
The applicants should be able and willing to work in a radiation environment and should have or quickly obtain the required qualification for this.
Part of the work will have to be done outside the normal working hours.

Conditions of employment
We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
• a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience of € 3,255 gross per month up to a maximum of € 4,274 gross per month (salary scale 10) for a full-time job
• full time position (38 hours per week)
• excellent secondary benefits, including a pension scheme and flexible employment conditions
• holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3 % of the gross annual income.
The position is temporary for a period of up to four years. The successful candidate will initially be offered a position for one year. Extension is conditional on a positive evaluation after 9 months.
