The KVI-Center for Advanced Radiation Technology (KVI-CART) performs basic research on subatomic and astroparticle physics and application-driven research on accelerator physics and physics in medicine. KVI-CART operates a large research infrastructure, the AGOR cyclotron facility, which provides intermediate energy beams for research in various domains of science as well as for industrial applications.

Job description
The research of the KVI-CART Medical Physics group focuses on the further improvement of radiotherapy with particle beams. Research topics are proton imaging: in vivo range verification via PET imaging of short-lived radionuclides and various aspects of dosimetry. The group also provides physics support to external users of the AGOR cyclotron facility.
We closely collaborate with Radiation Oncology and Cell Biology departments of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and with the Medical Radiation Physics group at the University of Oldenburg (Germany).
We are now looking for a postdoctoral fellow (two years) in proton therapy physics. This position is funded through the EU-supported project INSPIRE (Infrastructure in Proton International Research), in which 17 European research centers coordinate their research on proton therapy.

You will
• contribute to the development of very high dose rate (FLASH) and spatially fractionated particle irradiation modalities for preclinical research
• develop instrumentation for radiation biology experiments: an experimental setup for cell and organoid cultures under controlled oxygenation and methods and tools to study the evolution of the RBE along the Bragg curve.
In addition you will contribute to the support to external users performing experiments at the AGOR cyclotron facility in the context of the transnational access programme of INSPIRE.

Qualifications
You meet the following requirements:
• a PhD degree in Physics
• proven expertise in (medical) radiation physics, Monte Carlo simulations of radiation transport and radiation detection
• demonstrated experimental skills
• result driven
• excellent command of English (spoken and written)
• good communication skills
• team player.
The applicants should be able and willing to work in a radiation environment and should have or quickly obtain the required qualification for this.
Part of the work will have to be done outside the normal working hours.

Conditions of employment
We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
• salary dependent on qualifications and work experience of € 3255 gross per month up to a maximum of € 4.274 gross per month (salary scale 10) for a full-time job
• full-time position (38 hours per week)
• excellent secondary benefits, including a pension scheme and flexible employment conditions
• holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3 % of the gross annual income.
The position is temporary for a period of up to two years. The successful candidate will initially be offered a position for one year. Extension is conditional on a positive evaluation after 9 months.
