The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry.

We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes.

The position requires regular travel, prolonged periods of stay and ability to work within the Neutron Science facility at MLZ, Garching, near Munich.

Your responsibilities include:
Research in the field of „ Fundamentals of Neutron diffraction analysis of residual stress and texture of Additively
Manufactured Alloys (with focus on Ni-base superalloys)”; specific tasks include:
- Characterisation and development of the analysis methods of spatially resolved texture and residual stresses
in additively manufactured alloys using neutron diffraction
- Characterisation and analysis of elastic and plastic properties of additively manufactured alloys via in-situ
mechanical testing using neutron diffraction
- Developing Bragg Edge neutron imaging for microstructure, texture and strain analysis of additively
manufactured alloys
- Presentation and publication – of the results
- Interdisciplinary exchange within the national and international scientific community
- Active participation to the team activities and support of parallel projects
- Supervision of Master and Bachelor students

Your qualifications:
- Scientific degree (Master / Diploma) in the field of Materials Science, Physics or Mechanical Engineering or an
equivalent engineering discipline with very good grades
- knowledge and experience of diffraction theory and the application to the characterisation of residual stresses
and texture within materials
- knowledge of crystallography and metallurgy
- knowledge of additive manufacturing
- Excellent experimental skills
- Good Data analysis skills, including general coding skills (e. g. C++, Python)
- Experience with mechanical (Tensile, creep, fatigue) testing
- Very good communication skills in English (spoken and written)
- Good German (spoken and written) is desirable
