The institute Quantum Phenomena in Novel Materials is looking for a

PhD position (m/f/d) for the Investigations of Topological and Quantum Magnets (Master or Diploma in Physics)

Reference No.: EM 2019/11

The institute of Quantum Phenomena in Novel Materials undertakes world leading research in quantum and frustrated magnetism, multifunctional materials and superconductivity. As well as operating several X-ray and neutron instruments it also offers a state-of-the-art materials synthesis program and the full range of standard sample characterization facilities including X-ray Laue and powder diffraction, magnetization, specific heat and transport measurements.

Tasks and Topic of the doctoral thesis "Investigations of Topological and Quantum Magnets"
The PhD student will investigate topological and quantum magnets with particular focus on frustrated and low dimensional magnetism.Current research has revealed exotic phases such as classical and quantum spin ice which exhibit monopole excitations and new forms of topological order such as spin liquids with fractional excitations. These phenomena will be investigated by selecting materials which display these properties and using the experimental techniques of bulk physical properties measurements as well as neutron and X-ray scattering to study their behaviour. Pressure and magnetic field will be used to tune the ground states and provide additional insight, while deeper understanding will also be gained by performing computer simulations and by collaboration with theorists.

Applicants should have or be close to finishing a master/diploma degree in physics and should have taken courses in condensed matter physics.

Please attach to your application the following documents: Motivation letter, CV and the contact details of at least two academic references.

What we offer:
Fixed term contract for 36 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).

We particularly welcome applications from women. Preference will be given to handicapped applicants provided equal suitability.

We look forward to receiving your application via our application management system by 24.07.2019. For reasons of data protection regulations, we are unfortunately unable to consider applications that reach us by email or by mail in the application process.

Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB) operates two large facilities for materials research: the neutron source BER II and the synchrotron source BESSY II, which provide deep insights into the structure of materials and the processes within complex systems. Other important focuses of HZB research are thin film photovoltaics and solar fuels. Each year around 3,000 scientists use the HZB infrastructure facilities.

SCIENCE + CAREER + DIVERSITY = HZB ... is the formula for our successful human resources policy. We offer wide-ranging internal and external training programs for our employees as well as a special support program for young scientists. Our family-friendly workplace policy includes flexible working hours and telework arrangements.
