The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest multi-disciplinary research organisations. ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is based at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire and is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. It is owned and operated by the STFC.
Through the use of a proton accelerator and a high power target facility, ISIS Neutron and Muon Source produces beams of neutrons and muons that allow scientists to study materials at the atomic level using a suite of instruments, often described as ‘super-microscopes’. It supports a national and international community of more than 2000 scientists who use neutrons and muons for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering, and biology.

About The Role
We now have an exciting new opportunity to join our ISIS Design Division, where you will take responsibility for the design and delivery of one of the neutron instruments being delivered to the European Spallation Source in Sweden. This large project will have a critical impact on the successful delivery of world class science.
You will be responsible for full lifecycle engineering from concept through to commissioning of the complete beamline, including production of mechanical designs and detailing using 2D and 3D CAD. You will present these designs for peer and stakeholder review, and subsequently manage tendering, procurement and delivery of the approved designs.
Further responsibilities will include:
- Line management of ISIS Design Division staff.
- Managing contract design and detailing effort.
- Project management (including scheduling, setting and controlling budgets, planning, documentation and reporting).
- Ensuring all engineering design and installation work is carried out safely and in accordance with STFC and ESS codes of practice
- Travel to Sweden and to suppliers in support of the project
You will be qualified to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering combined with post graduate work in high-tech, high-spec, design engineering. You should also have proven experience in the design and engineering procurement environment within a scientific research facility with a focus on the appliance of functional mechanical engineering resolutions to real world problems.
Proven knowledge and experience using a 3D modelling package is also essential.
You will have an appreciation of technologies such as neutron guide optics, detectors and advanced motion components. Successful candidates will also have proven project management, and people management experience.
You will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a highly organised approach to work, be self-motivated, innovative and inquisitive, with an ability to multi-task and prioritise against a heavy workload and achieve demanding targets.
