Do you want to work in a new, state-of-the-art nuclear materials research facility? We need experienced engineers, scientists and technicians for its expanding and wide-ranging investment, commissioning and operation programmes.

The UK Atomic Energy Authority has an excellent opportunity for an experienced scientific manager to join its Materials Research Facility team.

The nature of the work means you may be eligible for an ongoing enhanced payment, the circumstances in which this would be the case, can be explained at interview.

Key accountabilities/responsibilities include:
-Manage internal and external usage requests and be responsible for initial feasibility assessments, determining scientific and technical feasibility, costs and timescales for customer.
-Work with the MRF operational and scientific teams, bringing job opportunities from initial ideas to fully defined and agreed packages of work. Responsibility for the MRF pricing strategy liaising with the Business Development department team on contractual arrangements as required.
-Manage portfolio of external customer projects that use the scientific analysis capabilities of the MRF. Coordinate the execution of projects, directing technical, scientific and project management staff.

The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research. Following recent UK funding two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built. Knowledge skills and experience
Essential
-Relevant scientific degree. Proven track record of scientific research including experimental materials testing
-Experience with multiple materials characterisation techniques (some of electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, mechanical testing, thermal and functional properties measurements).
-Demonstrable project delivery and management in a scientific marketplace.
-Experience of managing multi-disciplinary R&D programmes
-Delivery focus with experience working to tight deadlines

Desirable
-Experience of research for customers in the nuclear sector.
-Commercial management experience in a scientific/technical environment
-Expertise in the field of nuclear irradiation damage

Special requirements:
-Work in a radioactive laboratory and with beryllium, with the precautions these entail.
-Some UK and international travel

-PLEASE NOTE THE LEVEL 5 ROLE OFFERS A SALARY OF £39,543 - £44,936 AND THE LEVEL 6 ROLE OFFERS A SALARY OF £48,310 - £54,897. YOUR LEVEL WILL BE ASSESSED AT INTERVIEW.
