The Italian Space Agency (ASI) is a public research institution whose mission is promote, develop and disseminate the scientific and technological research applied to space, aerospace and fundamental physics. The technical and scientific areas are structured following a classification reflecting the new organizational structure that the ASI has recently given: Exploration and Observation of the Universe, Flight, Earth Observation, Telecommunication and Navigation, Launchers and Space Transport, Satellite Infrastructures, Radar, Spectroscopy, Metrology and Quantum Technologies.

The project goal is the observation of the climate changes variables (gases concentrations) from several points of view and the development of a new class of sensors with improved performances.

Recent workshops noted that currently, the global climate models and satellite-based observing systems are useful in supporting decisions from the national to global scales, but are inadequate for sub-national to local decision-making as the spatial resolution of their products are too coarse.

The project that includes several academic and research institutions is an experimental collaboration for atmospheric observation through satellite data and on site experimental measurements through optical gas sensors.

The task of ASI in the project is the development of optical gas sensors, on site experimental measurements and comparison with same observables obtained through GNSS data analysis.

The work will be predominantly focused on following topics:
  • development of acquisition system for optical gas sensor developed by other participants of the same project.
  • placement of the sensor on an unmanned plane and development of data transfer system.
  • Integration with GPS receiver measurement campaign and comparison with satellite data obtained in the framework of the same project contribution to the relevant research activities of the group within national and international collaboration is also expected.

Requirements:
  • PhD in physics, electronic, engineering or related field is necessary. Strong interests in development and operation of advanced scientific instruments programming skills in Phyton, Labview or Matlab are beneficial.
  • experience of laser driver electronic, laser frequency locking , laser phase locking, development of detector electronics.
  • strong interests in scientific fields related to optoelectronic, RF electronic, control systems.
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written English is necessary and basic knowledge of Italian language is beneficial.

We offer:
  • 1.6 keuro net salary
  • flexible working hours
  • nice working environment
  • good publication rate
Applications, containing CV, cover letter, contacts of references, and any other material the candidate considers relevant, should be sent to Luigi Santamaria (luigi.santamaria@asi.it)
