European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

Our Sample Environment and Characterization group is seeking support in its activities for the third-party funded MS SPIDOC project (www.ms-spidoc.eu/). The project MS SPIDOC has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 801406. We are therefore looking for an Integration Engineer (f/m/d) MS SPIDOC.

The position

  • Define functional requirements for complex mechanical components, systems and infrastructures and prepare specifications and manufacturing folders in compliance with relevant standards.
  • Conduct structural analysis and testing to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Mechanical, vacuum and electronic integration of the mass spectrometry modules developed by the MS SPIDOC consortium at the hard X-ray beamline SPB/SFX.
  • Perform the integration of a variety of complex sub-systems into one, functional piece of instrumentation.
  • Interfacing between MS SPIDOC partners and XFEL internal groups.
  • Participation in testing and commissioning of the MS SPIDOC prototypes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor, Master or PhD in computer science or similar technical field of study (e.g. engineering, physics or mathematics) as long as it involved architecting and coding software.
  • Degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of technologies relevant to mass spectrometry and/or instrumentation at synchrotrons or XFELs including mechanical design, electronics and vacuum components.
  • Record of completed projects in design and integration of instrumentation.
  • Relevant experience in the manufacturing of mechanical systems involving vacuum and alignment systems.
  • Knowledge of CAD tools.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills.
