ELI Beamlines research centre in Dolní Břežany is part of pan-European infrastructure ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure) representing a unique tool of support of scientific excellence in Europe by making available its capacities to the best scientific teams across the world. The aim of ELI Beamlines is to establish the most intensive laser system in the world and to operate it on a long-term basis. Due to ultra-high performances of 10 PW (1 petawatt = 1,000,000,000,000,000 watts) and concentrated intensities of up to 1024 W/cm2, we can offer our users a unique source of radiation and beams of accelerated particles. The so called beamlines will enable groundbraking research in the area of physics and science dealing with materials, but also in biomedicine and laboratory astrophysics and many other fields. ELI Beamlines is part of the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and it was open in 2015.

Functional safety engineer – Safety control system
ELI Beamlines Safety Team currently seeks a highly motivated and skilled Functional Safety Engineer to serve as a subject matter expert in instrumented safety systems. Safety Team provides technical support to all scientific teams. One of the most important areas is an instrumented safety system (Personal Safety Interlock system) in the experimental floor, whose implementation has started. We are seeking for a candidate that will take over the overall supervision of the entire project.
· supervision of the Personal Safety Interlock project; regularly reporting the progress and any functional safety issues that may occur within the project
· act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in functional safety and instrumented safety system; liaise with other SMEs in the field across the entire facility (e.g. laser safety system, machine safety system)
· communication with scientific teams, providing them a high-level support in understanding the concept of instrumented safety systems, and gather their operational requirements
· liaison with the supplier of the Personal Safety Interlock system to ensure successful design, installation, commissioning, and operation of the system
· review and evaluation of the project documentation according to the Functional Safety Management Plan, cooperation with the supplier on incorporation of ELI Beamlines comments.
· technical oversight of installation and commissioning of the system
· relevant university degree in control systems, engineering or equivalent
· 5+ years of work experience in industrial environment as a functional safety engineer, SW or HW developer
· demonstrable knowledge of instrumented safety systems, functional safety, and risk assessments (e.g. HAZOP, LOPA)
· experience in development of SW or HW applications for instrumented safety systems.
· functional Safety Engineer certification is an advantage
· working experience obtained in research, scientific, or academic institution is an advantage
· fluency in English (both oral and written)
