The Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz (JGU), the PRISMA+ Cluster of Excellence and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) invite applications for a joint appointment at the level of
Full Professor (W3 with tenure) for Experimental Particle Physics
This position is part of a cooperation between PRISMA and FNAL to establish a JGU participation in the FNAL Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) program. The Cluster of Excellence PRISMA+ “Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter“ investigates the fundamental building blocks of matter and their significance for the physics of the Universe. The participating research groups work in an international environment in the fields of astroparticle, particle and hadron physics as well as nuclear chemistry and precision physics with cold neutrons and ion traps.
We seek to appoint an internationally renowned researcher, who will further strengthen experimental particle physics research at JGU and in particular advance a German contribution to the LBNF/DUNE long baseline neutrino program. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the realization of detector components and data analysis. The experimental program should extend and closely integrate with the existing activities of the experimental particle and astroparticle physics group at JGU, which include high-energy particle physics (ATLAS, NA62, SHiP), dark matter searches (XENON, ALPS-II, IAXO) and neutrino physics (IceCube, Borexino, JUNO, ANNIE, Project 8).
Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in physics, a proven first rate research record and to possess the required pedagogical skills for teaching. JGU promotes a concept of intensive tutoring and expects a corresponding presence at the university. The appointment requires participation in teaching activities and in the duties of academic administration, as well as communication with german funding agencies.
The joint appointment status with FNAL is anticipated to be a minimum of five years, with the possibility of an extension. The successful candidate will have the opportunity for extended research stays at FNAL and will enjoy support by FNAL infrastructure and programs.
JGU aims at increasing the percentage of women in academic positions and strongly encourages female candidates to apply. JGU is an equal opportunity employer and particularly welcomes applications from persons with disabilities.
Qualified candidates are asked to submit their applications 06.11.2019, including the usual documents (curriculum vitae including research profile and list of publications, research proposal, teaching experience) as a single PDF file addressed to
