The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to develop, improve and operate the suite of particle / heavy ion accelerators used to carry out the program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); to support the experimental program including design, construction and operation of the beam transports to the experiments, plus support of detector and research needs of the experiments; to design and construct new accelerator facilities in support of the BNL and national missions. The C-A Department supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The department performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
The Pulsed Power Group of the Collider-Accelerator Department has an opening for an Electrical Engineer with a strong background in high voltage pulsed power and power electronics to conduct research, development, design, operation and maintenance of high voltage and high current pulsed power systems. The candidate will work with scientists, engineers, technicians, and other staff in a team environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Conduct research and development of new pulsed power systems.
• Conduct computer simulation of circuit and electromagnetic field.
• Initiate and execute detailed design.
• generate engineering drawings and specifications.
• Build and evaluate prototype(s) and estimate cost and schedule parameters for all Projects.
• Evaluate vendors and manage component procurements within project scope.
• Operate and maintain pulsed power systems
• Write software for instrumentation, controls, and data acquisition systems.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• BS Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics (or related field).
• Minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible related work experience that demonstrated comprehensive understanding of high voltage pulsed power, power electronics, high voltage pulsed power devices.
• Demonstrated experience with PLC, FPGA, and digital interface
• Demonstrated experience with high frequency instrumentation.
• Good understanding of analog and digital technologies.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Good electrical system testing skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Advanced Degree such as MS or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics (or related field) with work or research experience is preferred. • Knowledge and experience of electromagnetic field simulation and computation. • Good understanding of high frequency and high voltage engineering. • Demonstrated experience of high voltage testing. • Knowledge of gas discharge devices.
The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills, as well as the amount of relevant experience.
