The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is an international centre for scientific research situated in Grenoble, France. It is Europe's leading neutron science facility. We receive over 2000 visiting scientists per year to carry out world-class research in a wide variety of scientific fields.

The institute has established a Partnership for Soft Condensed Matter (PSCM) with the nearby facility ESRF that provides a platform for promoting the complementary aspects of neutron and synchrotron techniques in the soft matter field. The PSCM runs support laboratories within the Soft Matter Science and Support (SMSS) group for both external users and internal scientists that include equipment for sample preparation and characterisation for solution and interface studies. Working within the SMSS group in the field of soft matter you will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of the ILL-PSCM facilities and activities and you will have the following tasks:
- Running of ILL-PSCM equipment, implementation of technical improvements and animation of scientific work in a service-oriented environment;
- Implementation of a personal research programme in line with the activities in soft matter supported by the ILL user community and scientists;
- Promotion of outreach activities (participation to/organization of workshops, conferences, etc.);
- Co-supervision of ILL students and trainees in soft matter;
- Promotion, coordination, initiation and support of external grant applications ;
- Setting-up of PSCM collaborative partnerships and local contacting for neutron experiments including data analysis.

The successful candidate will interact strongly with ESRF personnel involved in the PSCM activities and collaborate in common initiatives, as well as with staff from ILL chemistry laboratories, also part of the SMSS group, and generally with ILL soft matter scientists.

Qualifications and experience:
- The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in physical-chemistry, soft matter or material science, completed at least one period of successful postdoctoral or equivalent research and experience in neutron and/or x-ray scattering on soft matter systems.
- Experience in running standard laboratory equipment is compulsory.

The post represents an excellent opportunity for early career researchers to broaden their experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world. Applications from more experienced scientists able to obtain a secondment period from their home institution will also be considered.
Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

Fixed-term contract of 5 years.
Medical fitness for work under ionising radiation is required.
Further information can be obtained by contacting the Head of the SMSS Group: Dr. Giovanna Fragneto tel.: +33(0), e-mail: fragneto@ill.eu or via (please do not send your application to this address).
 Generous company benefits (expatriation allowance), relocation assistance and language courses may be offered (for more information, please consult our employment conditions).
How to apply:
Please submit your application on line with a list of publications and the names of 3 references, including one from your present work place, no later than 19.01.2020, via our website (Vacancy reference: 19/55).
We are committed to equal opportunity and diversity; we therefore encourage anyone with relevant qualifications to apply.
