Data Analysis Scientist - Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction
Diamond Light Source
Didcot, Oxfordshire
£33,297 - £39,172 per annum (Discretionary range to £45,048)
Full time/Fixed term – 3 years
Ref: 10176
Join the single-crystal X-ray analysis team who develop cutting-edge methods in for data analysis at a world-leading facility.
Your new role
You will be a part of an Ada Lovelace Centre funded project in the Data Analysis Software Group at Diamond Light source to develop new algorithms to support a unique large-area time-resolved detector being developed at Diamond. The goals of the project are to realise the full scientific potential of this unique detector in time-resolved crystallographic investigations on beamline I19 at Diamond. You will work closely with the DIALS development team (https://dials.github.io) who have extensive expertise in developing tools for single-crystal X-ray diffraction data analysis. The work will include extending the software for the new detector and working with scientists to prove the instrumentation, as well as applying more advanced statistical techniques to the data analysis, which will be critical to fully exploit the new instrumentation.
You will join a close-knit and capable team who work at the cutting edge of developments in single-crystal X-ray diffraction and will work closely with Diamond Light Source staff and users. The role will include opportunities to be actively involved with experiments and present the methods and results to the wider scientific community.
What you'll need to succeed
Your experience of data analysis and statistics combined with programming in Python and / or C++ will allow you to develop new methods and algorithms with direct applicability to experiments at Diamond. Your can-do attitude will contribute to making the software a key part in delivering new science and making the facilities for time-resolved crystallography at Diamond Light Source world-leading.
About the Ada Lovelace Centre
The Ada Lovelace Centre (ALC) is an integrated, cross-disciplinary data intensive science centre, for better exploitation of research carried out at our large scale National Facilities including the Diamond Light Source (DLS), the ISIS Neutron and Muon Facility, the Central Laser Facility (CLF) and the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE). The Centre has the potential to transform research at the facilities through a multi-disciplinary approach to data processing, computer simulation and data analytics. It will provide computing hardware, build software and provide computational and data analytics expertise that will spark a paradigm shift in the capability of scientists to design, analyse and interpret experiments.
