Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division (https://commons.lbl.gov/display/physics/Physics+Division+Home) has an opening for an ATLAS ITk Project Scientist.

Berkeley Lab will build and test several thousand silicon strip detector assemblies and other associated electronic and mechanical components related to the detector array for the upgrade of the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva Switzerland. In this role, you will provide scientific and technical effort and direction to technicians, postdocs and students in clean room environment to support silicon strip detector construction activity.

What You Will Do:
• Provide scientific and technical expertise required towards the construction and testing of ATLAS ITk silicon strip modules.
• Plan and direct day-to-day module assembly, characterization, and testing operations, including precision gluing, wire bonding, metrology, inspection, and QC.  Perform electrical tests and measurements of module response.
• Direct personnel consisting of  2-4 technicians, 1 postdoc, and 1-3 undergraduate students or interns.• Consult/coordinate with physicists and engineers at LBNL and collaborating institutions.
• Responsible for assembly and commissioning of ATLAS-designed data acquisition and burn-in system for the modules built.
• Ensure proper documentation of procedures as well as ATLAS-required implementation and input to production database.
• Responsible for purchases of consumables and minor equipment needed to carry out the above scope.
• Responsible for planning equipment maintenance and service as needed,  including interaction with vendors.
• Prepare and present material at US ATLAS and ATLAS meetings.

What is Required:
• Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, or a related field.
• A minimum of two years of experience in silicon tracking detector assembly and testing, or similar scientific instrumentation such as beam line systems, spectrometers, focal plane arrays, particle/radiation detectors.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a research group environment. Potential to direct technicians on a day to day basis.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated ability to prepare research results for publication and presentation at seminars and scientific meetings.

• This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year, Term appointment with the possibility of extension for up to a maximum of 5 years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
