European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques. Early user operation started in September 2017.

The European XFEL generates photon beams in the X-ray energy range, with a so far unrivalled brilliance, making high demands on the detector systems. We have established an international collaboration with the goal to develop high speed 2D imaging detectors for our scientific experiments.

We are looking for a

User Support Scientist / Engineer – Detector Data Processing and Calibration (f/m)

The Position

  • act as an interface between the XFEL detector group, scientific instrument groups and beamline users
  • support the daily reliable operation of detector systems at the scientific instruments
  • participate in the development and application of our in-house calibration framework
  • migrate calibration and characterization algorithms provided by group members and external partners into our calibration framework
  • develop and support data mining tools to monitor detector performance over time
  • support external partners with regards to our calibration framework and the integration of it

Requirements

  • master, PhD or engineering degree in software development, physics or an equivalent academic degree
  • proficient knowledge of python-based data analysis (NumPy, SciPy, pandas, Jupyter)
  • experience in multidimensional data visualization experience in concurrent processing in Python (e.g. PyParallel, ipcluster)
  • experience in C++ is considered an asset
  • experience in GPU programming (CUDA) is considered an asset
  • experience with versioning tools such as git and gitlab is considered an asset
  • good communication skills and ability to work in a structured way in a multi-lingual, multi-disciplinary team

Duration: This appointment is limited to 3 years.


Salary and benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany. In addition European XFEL provides a non-contributory company pension scheme as well as broad relocation benefits. The European XFEL GmbH intends to achieve a widely international staff. Non-German candidates hired from abroad receive an international allowance.
