We are seeking an Engineering Manager (Software Development Manager; DevOps Manager) to work with Cloud (AWS), DevOps, Agile, Automation, CI/D and others in our Tech department.

As Engineering Manager, you will provide leadership to a cross-functional engineering team, responsible for managing the engineering lifecycle for IOP Publishing’s core publishing website and its supporting infrastructure.
This is an exciting role, with accountability for providing team & technology leadership through the build, deployment, operation, maintenance and support of your systems, working within a devops and agile environment, where experimentation, learning and collaboration are actively encouraged. If that’s not exciting enough, the role is also responsible for leading on the health of the team’s systems and for defining the product technology strategy.
You will work collaboratively with the team’s product manager and digital delivery lead, to support the team in delivering business value regularly and often, towards achieving agreed team objectives. (No “big bang” projects here, thank you.) You will also be working with a high performing and well-established offshore development team, based in Kiev. You yourself will be actively supported by a technology leadership team who understands the importance of creating empowered and autonomous teams, with the space to self-organise, experiment, grow and innovate. We are of course not without our share of technical debt and we recognise the need to continue to improve the maturity of our processes and ways of working. Our engineering managers play a pivotal role in supporting continual improvement within their teams.
The role would suit a technical manager, with strong collaboration and people development skills, experienced in successfully bridging the gap between the possibilities that technology creates and the real needs of our customers. The role entails line management, technical supplier management and technology management responsibilities. You will focus on managing technical risks, delivering against business strategy, defining technology strategy and ensuring that within the team you attract, retain and develop the best talent. We will also encourage and invest in your development and training.

Knowledge & previous experience
  • Team & technology leadership, building high performing engineering teams.
  • Line management & development of engineers.
  • Solution design, architecture strategy & roadmaps.
  • Modern development thinking, including agile, CI/D, devops, automation & security.
  • Cross-functional understanding of operations, QA & software development.
  • Collaborative & pragmatic, building strong and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, clearly communicating engineering needs, options & recommendations.
  • Knowledge of appropriate tools and technologies (currently java/linux environment). (It is not a requirement that you have recent hands-on coding experience, but we do expect a willingness when needed to “muck in” & help your team where you can.)
  • Knowledge of cloud technologies (AWS) preferred.
  • Off-shore team working preferred.
  • Modern web technologies preferred.
